SHACKLETON NEWS ARCHIVE
The Fund was launched in the mid 1990s, following the death of Edward, Lord Shackleton, son of the explorer, who had the closest possible association over many years with the Falklands. Lady Thatcher was the guest of honour.
The reception coincided with an impressive photographic exhibition, arranged (with the help of the Fund) by Mr Bjorn Gillsater.
Since its launch the Shackleton Scholarship Fund has raised about £300,000, yielding an annual income of around £15,000. Over the past 10 years it has spent over £110,000, awarding no less than 66 Scholarships.
In addition to Academic Scholarships, 'Quality Of Life' Scholarships were awarded to those who had brought their skills to the Falkland Islands to instruct or delight (eg performers, artists, sportsmen and women, musicians etc.).
