SHACKLETON NEWS ARCHIVE
Peter Speak, Senior Research Associate at the Scott-Polar Research Institute, writes that William Mills, Librarian at the SPRI, died on 8th May 2004. He will be sadly missed by us all.
Together with the Director of the Scott-Polar Institute, Dr John Heap, William Mills worked in the early 1990s on a project which culminated in the building of the Shackleton Memorial Library, a significant addition to the earlier building and winner of a prestigious architectural award. The University of Cambridge recognised Mills's achievements by promoting him to the post of Librarian and Keeper of Collections in 1998.
William Mills's book Exploring Polar Frontiers: a Historical Encyclopedia is just published (2 Vols., 797 pages, ISBN 1-57607-422-6. Published by ABC Clio, Santa Barbara, California). This substantial work, scholarly, authoritative and thoroughly researched, is a magnum opus on the exploration of both Polar regions.
